This checkerboard pattern is called ichimatsu in Japanese. It is named after a popular Kabuki actor of the 18th century. The pattern has been widely used for kimono fabrics and ceramics. Recently the ichimatsu pattern has been adopted into the logo for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
